چکیده

The natural continuum of visual processing from signal analysis to cognition inspires the search for extensions to current models to include some higher-level structural processing. This paper continues the authors’ study regarding the role of visual structure in cognition, where two representations of a natural image are considered: signal-based and structurally based. Structural representations preserve the overall image organization necessary to recognize the image content and discard the finer details of objects such as textures. Signal-based representations decompose and process an image as a signal in terms of its frequency, orientation, and contrast. A recognition experiment was conducted, where grayscale cartoon-renderings replace the simple line drawings previously selected as structural representations. An analysis between the two types of image representations using the three components of the multi-scale structural similarity (MSSIM) image quality metric (luminance, contrast, and structure) identifies signal structure as a crucial component in recognition.

A Novel Image Structural Similarity Index Considering Image Content Detectability Using Maximally Stable Extremal Region Descriptor

The image content detectability and image structure preservation are closely related concepts with undeniable role in image quality assessment. However, the most attention of image quality studies has been paid to image structure evaluation, few of them focused on image content detectability. Examining the image structure was firstly introduced and assessed in Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) measu...

An Adaptive Hierarchical Method Based on Wavelet and Adaptive Filtering for MRI Denoising

MRI is one of the most powerful techniques to study the internal structure of the body. MRI image quality is affected by various noises. Noises in MRI are usually thermal and mainly due to the motion of charged particles in the coil. Noise in MRI images also cause a limitation in the study of visual images as well as computer analysis of the images. In this paper, first, it is proved that proba...

An Efficient Curvelet Framework for Denoising Images

Wiener filter suppresses noise efficiently. However, it makes the out image blurred. Curvelet preserves the edges of natural images perfectly, but, it produces visual distortion artifacts and fuzzy edges to the restored image, especially in homogeneous regions of images. In this paper, a new image denoising framework based on Curvelet transform and wiener filter is proposed, which can stop nois...

Assessment of Random-noise Contamination in Digital Images via Testing on Wavelet Coefficients

Full-reference image quality assessment methods seek to measure visual similarity between two images (in practice, one original and the other its altered version). It has been established that traditional methods, such as Mean Square Error and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio poorly mimic the human visual system and much of the recent research in image quality assessment has been directed toward deve...
